In the late 1990′s gay Wilton Manors was put on the map by “the dynamic duo” Tony Dee and Charlie Mielke. The two friends of over 40 years are known for running and owning Chardees Dinner Club. Most recently, the two dudes brought their expert touch and sense of business to Tropics on Wilton Drive. Holla!
Months ago, Charlie and Dee’s nephew Steven informed Dee that Tropics was available. Dee purchased the property that Tropics is located on while Charlie and Steven purchased the restaurant itself.
Dee and Mielke have been dining at Topics for over a month now to immerse themselves in the environment. They’re observing the staff, the professionalism, the
clientele and the food.
The interior and exterior will be completely revamped, along with the menu. The dynamic duo is also planning an Endless Sunday Brunch and Thursday Evening
Never Ending Buffet.
Ummm, I love buffets! Not because I’m morbidly obese, but I think it has something to do with being able to serve yourself. I don’t know, but I’m a little excited for
Okay, I know when you think of the name “Joe Jonas” you’re probably thinking Disney teeny bopper. Seriously, though, Joe has GROWN UP. He’s trying to shed his squeaky clean image as fast as you can say 6-pack. If you’ve seen his latest solo music video you know exactly what I’m talking about. He’s also being featured in an episode of Hot in Cleveland. If Betty White approves, so do we.
Disney is letting their employees go crazy these days! Ok, not really BUT they are allowing them to grow beards now. Males, until now, were hired on as Disney employees with the understanding that
they would have to maintain the “Disney Look.”
The “Disney Look” only allowed male cast members to grow mustaches like Walk Disney. Now Disneyland is allowing its males to sport short beards that must be shorter than a quarter of an inch. Soul patches are still off limits, but the Carousel of Progress continues to turn (see what I did there).
If you’re a fan of vampires you’ve probably caught Ian Somerhalder on Vampire Diaries. Ian has got that southern charm and baby blues that could melt anyone’s heart. Word on the street is if you want to get closer to Ian that you should follow him on Twitter, he loves tweeting his fans…or you could just stalk him (we kid). Check out the gallery…

So, I’m not the biggest fan of RuPaul’s Drag Race but Ms. Sharon Needles caught my eye and I CAN’T. STOP. LOOKING.
I can’t quite remember how I landed on Logo Television’s official site but I was able to navigate to Drag Race’s page and watch the contestant introductions. There are a few gay Fort Lauderdale and gay Miami natives and I’d love for them to win but Sharon is downright amazing.
Let’s talk about the new sushi place on Wilton Drive shall we. So good! There are so many things that are traditional, and non-traditional, about Gaysha. Let’s discuss…
The food is amazing. Very fresh with really great taste. I ordered the green salad with ginger dressing and a spicy tuna roll. I’m not normally a fan of big chunks of fish in my rolls, but this was an exception. The tuna rolls i’m used to have a minced kind of tuna, while this one featured a large chunk. The texture was great and the taste was even better!
The sushi chef is not your traditional chef. He’s got kind of a fashion hawk going on with two full tattoo sleeves and a punk rock kind of style. The restaurant has a really modern kind of decor with some surprises thrown in (like the bottle of liquor above the sushi bar that has the words “suck it” written on it).
The price was typical of a sushi place, not super cheap but reasonable. They don’t open until noon, but they are open really late so it kind of makes up for it (I’m an early lunch eater). Overall, Gaysha gets two very enthusiastic thumbs up!
If you read Advocate.com you’ve probably seen the article about some of the gayest cities in the United States. This is a pretty broad statement if you ask me, but the people over at Advocate have a legit scoring system.
United States cities are ranked on the following:
Same-sex couple households per capita
Statewide marriage equality
Gay elected officials
Gay dating and hookup profiles per single male population
Gay bars per capita
Cruising spots per capita
Gay films in Netflix favorites
Good ole gay Fort Lauderdale came in at number four (the list included the top 15). Advocate said this about Fort Lauderdale:
In the late ’80s, Fort Lauderdale exorcised the college partiers and MTV’s Spring Break and transformed itself into a place for gays to vacation, indulge (there are more than 25 bars and clubs in the area), settle down, or escape South Beach. The suburb of Wilton Manors has 1,270% more gay men per capita than the national average, and Fort Lauderdale’s newly elected mayor, Jack Seiler, is vocally supportive of gay and lesbian equality.
