Film Review: The Queen of Versailles

The Queen of Versailles is simply astonishing in every sense of the word. Jackie Siegel, the irrepressible title character of this compulsively watchable documentary, gives reality TV stars a real run for their money. And Jackie’s husband David, 30-plus-years her senior, desperately needs that money. With the 2008 financial crisis causing his timeshare empire to reach near-bankruptcy, the Siegels are defaulting on payments for their 90,000-square-feet(!) Orlando dream home—a mansion modeled after Versailles. This jaw-dropping spectacle of conspicuous consumption is shocking, depressing and still vastly entertaining. David’s ego is as big as his dream home, and Jackie’s inability to downsize—hell, even her breasts need reducing—is darkly comic. Her parenting skills are fascinating, and when she asks a car rental agent—perhaps without irony—the name of her driver, it is downright hilarious. The Queen of Versailles is less a cautionary tale about the perils of overspending—Jackie’s shopping spree at Walmart is alarming—and more of a satisfying riches-to-rags tale about the ‘1%’ joining the lower 99. The testimonies from nannies, drivers—even Jackie’s friends and former neighbors—resonate, making viewers greatly appreciate Jackie and David’s assets depreciating as their relationship deteriorates. —Gary M. Restaurant Review: Pinche Taqueria

Well it seems like these days a new restaurant opens up every other week, some good, some not. Our taste buds led us to this week’s review of the new Pinche Taqueria located at 2045 Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors. With this location smack dab in the heart of Wilton Manors and it’s eye catching store front (service garage door that opens up and splits the inside from the out that really capitalizes and expands the patio feel, and the curiosity walking or driving by). Aside from the unique curbside appeal the look inside continues with a slight Tex-Mex meets Tijuana vibe but in a good way.

Well enough now already about the look and décor and let’s get to service and food! We were greeted nicely by both the bartender and waitress in a timely manner and offered a table fairly quickly. The menu had your typical assortment of breakfast, lunch and dinner options for Mexican food. Yes there was chicken, beef, steak and shrimp available in tacos, burritos and more.

After being seated and browsing the menu we were brought your expected chips and salsa. They had a pretty good tasting chips and salsa (I have always wondered how a Mexican restaurant can screw up and make bad chips and salsa but thank God not here). So once we had several minutes to view the menu and decide we chose burritos one bean and cheese the other shrimp.

Restaurant Review: Gaysha

Let’s talk about the new sushi place on Wilton Drive shall we.  So good!  There are so many things that are traditional, and non-traditional, about Gaysha.  Let’s discuss…

The food is amazing.  Very fresh with really great taste.  I ordered the green salad with ginger dressing and a spicy tuna roll.  I’m not normally a fan of big chunks of fish in my rolls, but this was an exception.  The tuna rolls i’m used to have a minced kind of tuna, while this one featured a large chunk.  The texture was great and the taste was even better!

The sushi chef is not your traditional chef.  He’s got kind of a fashion hawk going on with two full tattoo sleeves and a punk rock kind of style.  The restaurant has a really modern kind of decor with some surprises thrown in (like the bottle of liquor above the sushi bar that has the words “suck it” written on it).

The price was typical of a sushi place, not super cheap but reasonable. They don’t open until noon, but they are open really late so it kind of makes up for it (I’m an early lunch eater).  Overall, Gaysha gets two very enthusiastic thumbs up!

Grab Mag Chicago Really Likes Us!

Check out the spread that Grab Magazine Chicago’s Biweekly LGBT Publication wrote about us!

Back in the day, spas were pretty much exclusively for women of privilege. Typically the ladies would lunch on cucumber sandwiches and champagne and get massaged while their husbands played golf, however, now things have changed. Spas and their treatments along with healthy cuisine are for everyone, and it seems they are everywhere.

In our September 27, 2011 issue you might recall we published a travel piece entitled Desert Spas. It was mentioned in the article that Desert Hot Springs California, where most of the spas mentioned are located, has become a highly sought after vacation destination due to its prominence as a self-contained spa destination for those spa goers who consider water healing and therapeutic. In fact, it seems everywhere you look these days the healing benefits of water are being discovered.

I was in Fort Lauderdale recently, coincidentally at the start of “National Spa Week,” to go out on a date with this wonderful guy named Luke.  I had met Luke a couple of months prior and while there my cell phone rang.  The call was my friend John, who together with his business partner Bill, own The Cabanas Guesthouse & Spa.  He had heard I might be in town and wondered if I would like to come by with Luke to see the new heated salt water pool and spa they recently added to the property.

Before I could reply, he went on to say “I’ve already taken the liberty of reserving one of our King Premium Waterfront Rooms for you and Luke.”  I thought to myself, what a wonderful first date experience this would be and immediately replied “Thank you, Luke and I would love to stop by and see the changes you’ve made.”

I think The Cabanas Guesthouse & Spa is truly “one of” South Florida’s premier gay men’s clothing-optional guesthouses, if not “the best” and I’m not just saying that because I think so highly of John and Bill.

They purchased the property nearly 10 years ago, and in a relatively short amount of time, have successfully created a calm serenity for themselves and the sophisticated gay clientele they cater to.  The property resides amidst a tropical setting of palm trees and lush foliage.

They’re located in the Wilton Manors area of Fort Lauderdale and they’re the closest resort of its kind to those things of interest to gay men; such as nightlife, bars and restaurants.  In fact, it’s the only gay mens’ resort and spa in the Wilton Manors neighborhood.

Of course they are clothing optional and have high quality guest amenities which now includes a new full services Day Spa.  Guests and visitors can pamper themselves with a full line of spa services including facials, massages, mani/pedis, among others.  You can see why they were voted best Gay Guesthouse Accommodations by the “Peoples Choice Awards” and given the 2011 best guest house award at the Manor’s Besties Awards.

The resort grounds are meticulously landscaped and manicured and the rooms are designed with the savvy business traveler in mind. Their King Premium Waterfront Room had just been remodeled and featured panoramic views of the waterway, patio area, king size bed, air condition, full kitchen, private bath, flat screen TV/DVD combo and the fastest internet connection I have ever had while staying at a hotel.

The Cabanas Guesthouse & Spa is located at 2209 N.E. 26th Street, Ft. Lauderdale, FL. you can reach them at 866-564-7764 or you can find them on the web at www.thecabanasguesthouse.net, email: info@thecabanasguesthouse.com. On occasion they’ll have last minute room availability due to cancellations. If you are planning a trip over the next couple of days, they might just have a limited amount of rooms and dates that have opened up and are available at a discounted rate.

South Florida Blade Review – Cabanas Guest House and Spa

Cabanas Saltwater Swimming PoolJohn Dorry and Bill Barnish faced a problem at their Cabanas Guesthouse and Spa that all property owners would love to have: they were totally sold out over the long Labor Day holiday. “We’re sold out now and the rest of September looks very good,” said Dorry. “It’s going to be a very busy month, and we are very pleased with that. I think our location has something to do with it — us being so close to the bars and the restaurants.”

It’s not just location that draws guests to the Cabanas.  Located along the Middle River, one of Fort Lauderdale’s major canals, the guesthouse includes 18 rooms within several buildings, two pools, and a full-service spa on property.

Located on N.E. 26 Street just west of North Federal Highway, the Cabanas entered the gay guesthouse scene eleven years ago: Dorry and Barnish bought two proprties that had rented rooms weekly to a transient population, combined them to create one complex, and remodeled and landscaped extensively.

The Cabanas is the only gay guesthouse on the water, and that allows them to have kayaks for the guests; the property is also the only gay guesthouse with a steam room, as well as a salt water pool, which was created last year.

“The salt water, which they say are minerals, is much better on the skin than chlorine and it’s much more economical to run,” said Dorry. “The guests love it because it leaves a good feeling on their skin and they don’t feel dried out.”

The property also has a full-service men’s spa, located in a back corner of the property. Owned by Norman La Chance, a professional skin esthetician and massage therapist, the Cabanas Spa uses top-of-the-line products for facials, manicures/pedicures, body scrubs and a variety of massages. “The spa helps tremendously having that extra something to offer the guests, and we’re going to keep upgrading,” he said.

All guests get complimentary continental breakfast and free wireless Internet. There is also a smaller chlorinated pool and whirlpool for guests.

The various rooms at the Cabanas range from a standard room to a two-bedroom grand suite that occupies the entire top floor which, Dorry said, is popular when four or more people are traveling together. Some of the rooms have kitchens; others are waterfront rooms are on Middle River. The property is also pet-friendly.

Recent upgrades to the rooms include new flat panel televisions and replacing the air conditioners with quieter units. “We are renovating wherever we can and fixing different things up.”

Dorry credits his location in Wilton Manors to their success—because, as he says, they “are so close to everything.” The Green Hopper, a green commuter service which started operating earlier this year within the city of Wilton Manors, has also helped. Many guests who check into The Cabanas don’t drive or rent cars and if a guest wishes to go to the beach and don’t want to use a taxi; the Cabanas has complimentary bicycles for guest use.

The Cabanas locally has been a popular spot for various fundraisers throughout the years and recently appeared on the cover of Passport magazine, an international gay travel publication. The whirlpool area is also popular with local photographers and the wall behind the whirlpool is almost as well known as the guesthouse itself.

Dorry and Barnish have worked hard to keep their award-winning guest house attracting new guests as well as welcoming back previous ones because, as Dorry puts it, “in this business, you want to stay as full as possible.”
