Pink Flamingos came out this week in 1972

Here’s to John Waters, Edith Massey, Mink Stole and of course Divine as Pink Flamingos debuted this week john_waters_pink_flamingosback in 1972. The grandfather of bad taste (and we mean that in a good way) John Waters truly pushed the envelope with his film making.

John Waters’ outrageous movie Pink Flamingos opens in theaters and introduces the world to Divine (Harris Glenn Milstead). When the film was initially released, it caused a huge degree of controversy due to the wide range of “perverse” acts performed in explicit detail. It has since become one of the most notorious films ever made and is rated as #29 on the list of 50 Films to See Before You Die.

Sharon Needles Debuts New Song & Video

RuPauls Drag Race Winner Sharon Needles new video This Club is a Hunted Club is released. Fun and of course dark and twisted as one would expect from her.

Were not so sure that it will be a top 40 hit but it will most likely be a “gay video bar hit” and isn’t that what really counts?

Gay Men and the History of the Mustache

In the current on line article The Advocate gives a history of gay men and the “stache” (as in mustache). Some straight men may wear them but it truly has been a part of gay men’s history and for better words…we mastered this trend also!

The Walrus. The Captain. The Chevron. The Pyramid. The Fu Manchu. Call it what you want but know that gay, bi, and trans men and even a few queer women have helped popularized the mustache over the years. Now Allan Peterkin’s new book, One Thousand Mustaches: The Cultural History of the Mo (Arsenal Pulp) offers a lighthearted cultural history of the ‘stache — and its many incarnations— through the ages. He inlcudes a handful of gay or bi men, some in multiple categories (Freddie Mercury fits in “gay mustaches” and “mustaches that rock,” for example) and since he’s a doctor, male grooming expert, and writer (check out One Thousand Beards for even harrier boys), you can bet he knows what he’s talking about. In honor of Peterkin’s work, and the Movember movement (in which men around the globe sprout mustaches in November to help raise money and awareness about prostate and testicular cancer), we’ve come up with our LGBT slideshow of the ‘stache through the ages from Bayard Rustin and Rock Hudson to Marcel Proust and Jennifer Miller.

Simply Delish is History and Angel’s Debuts

On the ever so changing and expanding night life and restaurant seen on the drive we have some updates.

As you may have read here recently Village Pub Wilton Manors is open and well worth a visit. Yes fun crowds, friendly bartenders and a great new space. We also have the Infinity Lounge  adding a new vibe and distinct feel that was a welcome addition to the drive. Infinity Lounge is the perfect place and size for a more intimate cocktail.

Just down from the Village Pub in the former Simply Delish space is now the new Angel’s. Well the exterior  of Angel’s has a new coat of paint that went from fuchsia to a copper orange. From the interior so far it appears to be still in transition with the right side being closed off and most likely being redone. The left side of Angel’s looks pretty much the same as Simply Delish did so far.

There was 3 of us looking for lunch and 1 that was strictly with a vegan diet. We looked over the menu which appeared to the pretty familiar breakfast and lunch choices. Our vegetarian in the group inquired about if there was a “veggie burger” that they did not have. The Angel’s waiter was very friendly and recommended one of their salads but also said they would be willing to try and accommodate and make any of their other dishes to his liking. We will give the waiter high marks for friendliness and his effort.

As far as a “full review” of Angel’s we will get back to you in the next several days and will eat there (minus or vegetarian patron). If any of you have ate at the new Angel’s drop us an email or message and give us your opinion (or any of the other dining and nightlife options on the Drive!).

New HIV+ Dating Site by Project Runway’s Jack Mackenroth

Model, reality TV star, designer, trainer and now dating site owner. Yes Project Runway reality TV star Jack Mackenroth continues to prove he can do it all.

Poz men are getting an exciting new dating site in the form of Volttage. “Volttage is a site devoted to developing an online community where HIV-positive men can connect without concerns of judgment and stigma.” It is a project that he truly can relate with obviously being HIV positive and where others are pretty much in the same boat.

It looks like he continues to take on new endeavors and breakdown stereotypes. Being HIV positive does not mean withering away and wasting said one interested soon to be new  member for his new site.

MSNBC’s Thomas Roberts to Wed Partner this Saturday

MSNBC host Thomas Roberts will become the first cable news anchor to marry a person of the same sex after his wedding this fall.

In an interview with the New York Observer, Roberts will wed his partner of 12 years, Patrick Abner. The Manhattan wedding will take place in front of about 150 guests in late September.

Many of Roberts’ openly gay cable news colleagues — including Don Lemon and Rachel Maddow — have been in long-term relationships. But he is the first one to tie the knot.

Roberts told the paper that he is exercising like mad to get himself into wedding shape.

“I was on the treadmill for three miles this morning,” he said. “I will be on it for three miles tomorrow. I had a Red Bull for lunch and I eat gum. I’m the typical groom!”

Roberts also told the Observer that he was the first cable news anchor to publicly come out. He revealed he was gay in a 2006 speech before the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association.
