How Does South Florida Cities Score on HRC’s New Equality Index?

Life seems pretty good for South Florida’s large gay population . Well at least we like to think that life is pretty good and progressive. However beachit looks like we have work to do according to a new Human Rights Campaign report.

The Human Rights Campaign released its first Municipal Equality Index today, and rated 137 U.S. cities from all 50 states based on their policies are to LGBT people. Of the 137 there were 11 cities that scored 100 and  none were in Florida.

With the 11 cities that scored 100 four were in California: Long Beach, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Fransisco and two were Massachusetts: Cambridge & Boston. The remaining four were: St.Louis, Missouri, New York, New York, Portland, Oregon, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Seattle, Washington.

The Sunshine states highest score was not even in South Florida and was Orlando with 77 points. Miami came in at 72 then Fort Lauderdale & Wilton Manors each scored 62. More Affordable “Gaybor Hoods”: Oakland Park,FL Ranks on List

We all are well aware of the countries big gay neighborhoods and cities: West Hollywood, Silver Lake, The Castro, South Beach, Wilton Manors, etc. Yes these are cities and areas that gays have moved in some time ago and fixed up, polished and reinvented. These are also areas that have seen rent and real estate sky rocket (and yes some have seen huge price drops).

But with a CNN Money article out this past summer that highlighted some “Gayborhood alternatives”. Some of these communities are a close drive from some of the ones mentioned above and make your dollar go further. Sunny Fort Lauderdale has always been gay but in the last 10-15 years it has really become one of the largest and most diverse gay centers in the USA.

It’s no secret that Wilton Manors is now the gay heart of Fort Lauderdale with it’s clubs, bars, shops, diners and more. But now just a stones throw from Wilton Manors is Oakland Park. This city is just starting to see a new refurbished downtown (OK so it still has a ways to go). But there are some big plans in store from what we have heard.

With some of it’s cute neighborhoods and several bars plus a 5-10 minute drive to Wilton Manors it looks like Oakland Park has a bright and sunny future.

Boca Tan vs. South Beach Tan in Wilton Manors

It seems like there is “Tanning War” going on in Wilton Manors as South Beach Tanning has recently opened up in Five Points Plaza. Yes that is the same plaza where Boca Tan has been located for several years but has just recently relocated strategically directly across the street.

They were both open in the Five Points Plaza for a short duration as it became apparent that Boca Tan’s time was most likely about to run out with that lease. The question remains as if there really is enough customers to support two tanning salons in sunny Fort Lauderdale so close to one another.

Let us know if any of you have tanned at either and if you have any comments or feedback with customer service at both Boca Tan or South Beach Tanning.
